Feb. 8–Jim and Jennifer Myers used to look for work by chasing storms in Kansas and Nebraska. Now, they concentrate on repairing dents six days a week
at Dent Doc Express.
They made good money repairing hail-damaged cars, but the cost of gasoline and everything else went up. And it wasn’t fun being away from home all the time.
They could have closed up shop and gone to work elsewhere. But, despite the rocky economy, they decided to open their own business and fill a unique niche.
They bill Dent Doc Express as “Your complete reconditioning center of the Pee Dee.” It’s located at 301-A Second Loop Road.
Among the services offered are paintless dent repair, minor collision repair, bumper repair or replacement, steam cleaning and re-dyeing carpets and custom pinstriping.
Jim Myers has been in the auto repair business for 29 years. He was repairing dents in a 2006 Raceway Automotive Group BMW convertible late Wednesday.
The gray Beamer had five dents in it that occurred while it was being transported to one of the Raceway lots. They ranged from the size of a quarter up to a dollar bill. It took Jim about an hour to repair them.
“I specialize in dent repair without using paint or Bondo,” Jim said. “I can fix the smallest size dents all the way up to football-size ones.”
Jim uses special tools that “massage the dent back out,” he said. Each tool is different because of the location of the dents. It’s tedious work.
“I aim to please,” he said. “I try to give each and every car the attention it deserves. I’m a real particular guy when it comes to working on cars. It’s always a challenge to see what I can do.”
Jennifer, meanwhile, is the scheduler. And she does everything else except paintless dent repair. She’s also been going door to door delivering flyers announcing the arrival of Dent Doc Express.
She met Jim 13 years ago.
“Jim hired me and decided I was worth keeping,” she said with a laugh. “Now, we can’t imagine not being with each other. We work all the time.”
Both are enjoying their new location and not being as mobile as they once were.
